Underlying

Asset, commodity, or index whose price performance determines the value of a derivative instrument.

The underlying is the asset, index, or commodity upon which a derivative or financial instrument is based. It determines the derivative’s value and exposure.

For example, a WTI crude futures contract has WTI crude oil as the underlying. Price movements in the underlying directly affect the derivative’s market value.

Underlying assets include commodities, stocks, indices, currencies, and interest rates. They are crucial for pricing, hedging, and trading strategies.

Understanding the underlying ensures accurate risk assessment, valuation, and execution in derivatives and structured product markets.
