In the news, the Houthis have said that they had launched missile and drone attacks on Saudi deployments in Yemen's Marib and Hadramout provinces, claiming to have inflicted heavy casualties and destroyed military camps, weapons depots and vehicles. The nation has also claimed an understanding with Oman on the geographic coordinates of a new shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz. According to Iran's Foreign Ministry, a joint announcement is now being finalised, provided there is no interference from third parties. Elsewhere, China's state-owned Sinopec has ramped up purchases of Russia's ESPO crude to offset reduced Middle Eastern supply following the US-Iran war, according to Reuters sources. The cheaper Russian barrels have helped Sinopec maintain refinery runs and capture strong fuel export margins. Sources estimate the refiner has purchased 30-40 ESPO cargoes for Jul-Sep delivery, equivalent to around 5-6% of its 5.2mb/d refining capacity. In Russia, crude and condensate output rose slightly in July, increasing by around 100kb/d m/m to above 9mb/d, supported by stronger exports and a recovery in refinery runs, according to Reuters sources. Despite sanctions and repeated refinery attacks, Moscow continues to maximise oil revenues by maintaining elevated supply. Output is unlikely to hold at July levels in August. OPEC data showed Russian production fell to 8.928mb/d in June from 8.989mb/d in May. In other news, India’s fuel consumption rose 3% m/m in July to 19.92Mmt, the highest level since March, according to Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell data. Demand was also up around 3% y/y, with LPG consumption increasing 7.5% m/m to 2.35Mmt, although still down 16% y/y. Finally, as of the time of writing, the front-month (Oct/Nov) and 6-month (Oct/Apr’27) Brent futures spreads are at $2.00/bbl and $7.06/bbl, respectively.
